Anjal Chande is a choreographer, composer, writer, teacher, and performer. Described by The New York Times as a “gifted stylist” and by Time Out Chicago as “arrestingly poetic,” she has performed in Chicago, Denver, New York City, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune. She received a Fulbright award to perform and study in Berlin, researching the factors that contribute to an ecosystem in which artists and art-making thrive.
Chande founded Soham Dance Space in 2007 as a home for innovative creative practice, live performance, critical dialogue, and community gatherings. She has received awards from Chicago Dancemakers Forum, Ragdale Foundation, DCASE, and Illinois Arts Council, has collaborated with numerous artists and Carnatic orchestras, and is a proficient percussionist and tabla player. As a teacher, Anjal aims to teach the bharatanatyam form with radical love, artistic integrity, and a desire to instill a sense of creative possibility and critical reflection within students. Her essay on bharatanatyam dance in Chicago will be in the forthcoming Third Coast Dance anthology published by University of Illinois Press.
