Aqil Brothers

Sunday, June 26th | 2:30pm

Chicago-based artists Shamim and Mithun represent the heart of Bangla Qawali and Lokogeethi folk music. From a young age, the Aqil Brothers bore witness to the power and resilience of music. Their father, a musician from their village in Bangladesh, performed regularly and moved local audiences.

“We watched our father sing his heart out at public shows and in our own home. His compassion for the music touches everyone who hears him. He had a song for every occasion. Whether it be for a happy and joyful moment or if it was for the sadness in someones misfortune. He found a way to relate to everyone with his melodious voice that is so touching.”

Following in their father’s footsteps, the Aqil Brothers began accompanying their father on the Harmonium and Dhol. Together, they have created a bond that goes beyond the art, it is a link to their home, culture and lineage. They are bound together: “not just with the DNA but with the love of music.”
